Mother Teresa once said, “To keep the lamp burning, we have to keep putting oil in it.”
Although oil lamps are foreign objects to most of today’s generation, the foundation from which this quote was created is still an essential tool when keeping up with the everyday changes to life and the market place.
This past week, my co-workers and I had the opportunity to learn innovative ways of being more effective, more focused, and simply more productive not only within the QeH2 organization, but throughout our personal lives as well. QeH2 ownership collectively decided that equipping their staff with the necessary tools to be proactive in their personal lives and the work they do for QeH2 through Stephen Covey's 7 Habits of Highly effective People.
“My goal is to boost productivity, promote efficiency, and unite our guys using the 7 Habits Training,” replied Ian Holt, Co-owner and Principal at QeH2.
Effectiveness is getting superb results today (production) in a way that allows us to get those results over and over again (production capability). The 7 Habits focus on a P/PC balance, and they are:
1. Be Proactive
2. Begin with the End in Mind
3. Put First Things First
4. Think Win-Win
5. Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood
6. Synergize
7. Sharpen the Saw
Over the course of the next seven weeks, the staff at QeH2 will be focusing on one habit each week; living it, teaching it, and growing stronger personally and professionally. The purpose of this 7 week “contract” is to help build new, lasting habits of effectiveness. Although it may take several weeks for QeH2 and even each individual to kick old habits, once developed, these 7 habits come naturally with little energy spent.
“That which we persist in doing becomes easier- not that the nature of the task has changed, but our ability to do has increased.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson
